Draw Comic Book Pages Part I: thumbnails and pencils versions
Draw a comic side as the superhero comic books are in can, but fun is not a game.
The reader can see and read a full color page in 30 seconds, but it takes an artist of 8 to 16 hours (Or more to produce).
Why?
Because most professional comic artists go through five stages Quality complete a full-page comic high. Some of these phases require last much longer than an hour. Stages are:
1) to create thumbnails
2) pencils version
3) Inked Version
4) Colored version
5) Lettered version
Note: Normally it is not one, but several artists, the production of a single comic book page. This is because every artist is specialized in a particular stage. The end result is often better when made by a team. And to work this way also speeds up the process.
Let's describe the first two Stages in this article:
1) to create thumbnails
After reading the script (which, in addition to the dialogues and captions can include specific descriptions and instructions of the writer), the artist spent some time imagining how the page should look like it, the history also to tell (without the need of words), and it looks good and entertaining.
If the artist is playing around with variations of the panel and the Page in his (or her) mind, the artist picks up a piece of paper (usually a letter or A4 blank sheet of paper for computer printer), and begins sketching one or more versions of the page (often with a HB pencil) on a very small scale.
The Size of these small (and sketchy) sites can vary, but they are about 2 by 3 inches each (5 x 7 cm). Because they are much smaller than the final pages, she as thumbnails are not known.
This stage is very important because thumbnails is a practical, fast and effective way is to define the best layout for a page (height of the panel and their shape) and where the main Points (such as local characters, great props, backgrounds, etc.) are important facial expressions, and perspectives of action in them.
If you try to do this to a full size board and make a gross mistake, you have to throw that board and start over. Thumbnails to prevent that, because you may have about do six of them in a very cheap paper, to try things until you find what works.
Note: Artist treat rare or to keep their miniatures and throw them away.
A case does the image is required is when authors or editors of the artists to ask them to do, prior to its approval to get the drawing on the last pages.
So if you are serious about drawing comic strips, I recommend that you always take one or more thumbnails of your pages, until you completely satisfied with them as a reference for the final, full page size to use.
Note: Thumbnails are created quickly . And loose, so they usually look very "energetic" The challenge is one last page, as the energetic (or more) produce, as its Thumbnail. Unfortunately, this is not always the case, because sometimes, the reference as photos or 3D images is overused for poses or expressions in the preparation of last page, making them static or boring.
2) pencils version
After the preview is done (and approved will, if necessary), the artist takes a white board that 11 inches to go from 17 of the last page with a pencil, and the image as a reference.
Note: If you system will be used to metric 11 by 17 inches is a little smaller than 30 x 45 cm. Compared to standard sizes, It is near the size of an A3 paper.
So this is a great table. Then … Wait!
Comic books are much smaller than the. Regular superhero comic books around 6.5 of 10 inches (16 x 20 cm.)
So … Why drag artist of the last page in such a large scale?
Because it is easier to do better on a larger scale.
In my case, I have a Scotch 11 by 17 inches (or A3) to the drawing board and white board with a light blue pencil, 10 by 15 inches square in the center (if the board does not already have such a rectangle.) The area is where the page is pulled.
Still using the blue pencil, and the image as a reference, I am moving in a somewhat sketchy way, the entire page (including the limits panel) inside that 10 by 15 inch area. I do add details and some of the last few pencils, but the whole drawing is still sketchy. This process can an hour or so, depending on the complexity of the page.
Then I take an HB pencil and draw the entire page back to the beginning of the blue pencil, but this time to pay extra attention to detail, look what the final drawing. This process always takes longer than the "light blue pencil" step.
Why light blue with a pencil? And why drag the page twice?
The light blue pencil is drawn used to draw the foundation on which the final artwork is the normal pencil.
And it is light blue (a color other than gray) to be able to delete it simply with an image editing program (eg Photoshop), once the site is to scan the computer.
So when using this technique, the original work of art (the actual board, which was drawn by the artist), has both blue and gray regular pencil Traces.
But the digitized version of the page (stored in the computer with a scanner) that is used in the later stages, has only the gray (and last) pencil marks.
This is a great technique to produce works of art to be better because the artists has two chances of drawing to make the look just right. I suggest you use them.
Note: As some collectors do not like art, pencils mixes light blue and gray, and because some artists prefer to produce pages very clean pencil, it is an alternative to the light blue pencils art. It requires two planks and a light box (a special table, the drawings used track.) A board is used to do the sketchy drawing, and the others on the final, "clean" drawing that is drawn on the lightbox to do, and tracing over the first and the sketchy drawing.)
– - –
If the pencil stage is a large part of the final comic page is ready. Therefore, the pencil (the artist, has the pencils version) is by most as important as the writers looked at, and his (or her) name is conspicuously shown in the credits.
But the Rest of the stadiums, inking, coloring and lettering are also important, even essential, to complete a comic book page.
So we are, what 2-4 hours of work so far?
The name says "comic" but this is a serious matter. comics is a lot of work. But it is also very creative, work and fun to do:)
Part II of this article series describes the next stages of the creation of a professional comic book page.
